Background

From the symposium program.[1]

The 100-Year Starship™ Study, or 100yss, was announced on October 28th, 2010. On January 11-12, 2011, a strategic planning workshop was held that brought together 29 visionaries with diverse backgrounds, from engineers to authors. Over the course of two days, participants discussed the requirements for seeding research that would enable interstellar flight.
On May 5th 2011, a request for information (RFI) to solicit ideas and information to support the 100 Year Starship™ Study program was released.
On June 15th, a public solicitation was released seeking abstracts for papers and/or topics/members for discussion panels, to be presented at The 100 Year Starship™ Study Symposium, to be held in Orlando, Florida from September 30 through October 2, 2011.
On August 26th, a solicitation announcement for the 100 Year Starship™ was released to solicit proposals detailing the “machinery” of the 100YSS business stratagem. This will result in the award of a grant to bring the 100YSS organization into existence and cover start-up costs, as well provide as some initial intellectual property. The 100 Year Starship™ Study Public Symposium was convened September 30th – October 2nd in Orlando Florida. The three-day symposium features paper presentations, panel discussion and special events.
After selecting the organizational entity and awarding the seed money, The 100 Year Starship™ Study will officially end on November 11th 2011.
