Lockheed Martin

When most people think about Bethesda, MD-based Lockheed Martin (LockMart for short, despite their lack of a door lock division), they think of military technology. The most space-related thing you'd expect LockMart to be into would be ICBMs and ways to prevent them from reaching their targets. But the Space Systems Company (SSC) division of LockMart actually supports a lot of peaceful research-focused space projects, including many of NASA's robotic probe missions. (They accept responsibility for the units mixup that crashed the Mars Climate Orbiter.) They've also worked on the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes, the Space Shuttle external tank, and the International Space Station.

Formed through the merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta in 1995, LockMart also participates in educational efforts related to space exploration. It has sponsored the annual student-run SpaceVision conference, as well as at least two IMAX theaters and some of the space-related films they show.
