About UB-SEDS

The mission of UB-SEDS is to raise awareness of and promote space exploration and development. UB-SEDS is a connection between students of all disciplines and space projects, space industries, and space careers.

UB-SEDS was the host of NECOS, the North East Conference of Space, or SEDS northeast regional conference, in March, 2010.

UB-SEDS was recognized as SEDS Chapter of the Year in 2010.

Projects

UB-SEDS is active in many projects that allow students to apply their knowledge and experience.

Rocketry: UB-SEDS has a high-powered rocketry project group. This group works to develop and launch high-powered rockets. Currently, members are flying up to NAR Level 1 (up to I impulse class). UB-SEDS has a launch site in Elba, NY.

Astronomy: UB-SEDS has an active astronomy project group. The club owns a Celestron C10-NGT telescope for use at astronomy events held on campus. This group allows members as well as the university community a chance to partake in astronomy observation. Many members also belong to the Buffalo Astronomical Association, and travel frequently to their observatory in North Java, NY. The astronomy group is also working on a proposal to rebuild a student-run observatory on our campus.

Educational Outreach: UB-SEDS works to inspire youth to pursue academic excellence, and to inform and and inspire them about space-related topics. Members travel weekly to the Buffalo Museum of Science to conduct activities with youth. UB-SEDS has also held programs at public elementary schools.

Nanosat: In 2008 and 2010, UB-SEDS has submitted proposals to the US Air Force's University Nanosat Program. The 2008 proposal featured relative attitude determination using lasers, and the 2010 proposal involved concepts in glint observation, on-orbit calibration, and exospheric testing. Both proposals can be found at http://www.ubseds.org/nanosat.

High-Altitude Balloon: This project group is working on developing a payload to be attached to a weather balloon to photograph and observe the upper atmosphere. This group plans its inaugural balloon launch in the spring or summer of 2011.

Flight Computer: The UB-SEDS flight computer project is part of a flight slow award and Sub-Board Inc grant to build a telemetry based flight computer. This project has the goal of creaing a low cost open-souce architecture for flight computers for high powerered rockets, which will be able to relay data back to the ground.

Botwars: The Botwars project group builds a Battlebot to compete with other UB engineering club during Engineers' Week in February.
